We have deep experience working on all Porsche models from the 1960s right up to models from the 1990s.

Short wheelbase (SWB) Porsches are a firm favourite with our customers. There is really nothing to beat in terms of handing and connection with the road than a short wheelbase 911 or 912. The early 911 grew from its 1963 2.0 litre flat 6 giving 130bhp at launch to the 170bhp 911S in 1969. 1969 saw the change to long wheelbase cars - a final admission from Porsche that the handling on the SWB 911 could be wayward. Porsche had tried to correct this by the introduction of cast iron front bumper weights which was hardly a refined engineering solution! The 912 which was available from 1965 to 1969 had always enjoyed superior handling and weight balance due to its lighter 4-cylinder engine.

After many years in the shadows of the Porsche 944, the Porsche 924 in S form is rising in value and offers the best of both worlds – the light 924 body shell with the 2.5 litre Porsche 944 engine, it’s injected and ideal as daily classic driver. 911s from the early 1970s like the 911T and 911E are fantastic cars to drive on a regular basis but for truly confident daily motoring the Porsche 911 in 993 or 964 form is hard to beat.

With early cars look out for examples with the least rust – full galvanisation did not occur until the late 1970s. There are plenty of rust traps on the 1960s through to the 1980s shells, so these cars rust from the inside out. The natural fibre sound deadening used in the 1960s cars was (and is) a terrible water trap.

Replacement body and chassis panels are easy to find but are expensive. The front suspension set up must be extremely precise and any fuller front end panel replacement must use an alignment jig.

All Porsche engines were built by hand and require a decent investment to rebuild them. The 912 4-cylinder power plant may share the same engineering platform as a VW engine but its tolerances are much finer and it’s a relatively stressed engine package that needs an experienced Porsche rebuilder to get right.
